Lansing Juneteenth Celebration Poster

For this project, I was tasked with selecting a Michigan tourist event and creating a poster series that captures the essence of the event.

I chose the Lansing Juneteenth Celebration because Juneteenth holds significant personal meaning to me as a Black woman. It marks the day slavery was officially ended, and all enslaved people were declared free. Celebrating Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of freedom, history, and resilience, which is why I wanted to highlight this event.

To begin, I researched three events that intrigued me, and after narrowing it down through a process of elimination, I decided on the Lansing Juneteenth Celebration. The next step was image collecting—gathering visuals that represent the sensory experience of Juneteenth. I considered what the event might taste like, smell like, sound like, feel like, and look like.

Once I had a collection of images, I started experimenting with collaging, bringing the pieces together in a creative and dynamic way. Of course, this process was accompanied by snacks and sparkling water for inspiration!

After collaging, I transitioned to working digitally, applying the techniques I’d explored with physical materials. The process involved plenty of trial and error before arriving at my final design.

Conclusion:

This project enhanced my skills in designing a poster series that communicates essential information while capturing the spirit of an event. It taught me how to visually translate an experience and make it appealing and informative for potential attendees.
