Google Family STEM Day

Event Graphics Design
Google hosted a Family STEM Day event designed to engage kids and families through hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math experiences. The event featured a large custom Scrabble Jr.–inspired installation along with a branded photo backdrop used throughout the day.

I was brought on to design key visual assets that would feel playful and kid-friendly while still aligning with Google’s clean, recognizable brand system.

Objectives

  • Create engaging, colorful graphics that appeal to children and families
  • Maintain strong brand alignment with Google’s visual language
  • Improve visibility of “Family STEM Day” in event photography
  • Deliver print-ready files on a tight timeline
  • Scope of Work

  • Box Panel Design (Repeating Layout)
Designed a master side panel layout for the Scrabble Jr. installation that would repeat seamlessly across all four sides. The design needed to work around dimensional Google lettering while maintaining visual balance and energy.
  • 8’ x 8’ Step & Repeat Backdrop Redesign
Redesigned the event backdrop to ensure “Family STEM Day” appeared higher and more clearly in photos, addressing visibility concerns from previous events.
  • Multiple Design Concepts
Created three visual directions for each deliverable, giving the client flexibility to choose the look and energy that best matched the event.
  • Print-Ready Production Files
Delivered Adobe Illustrator source files and PDFs with proper bleed, crop marks, and sizing for immediate handoff to the printer.
  • Design Approach

The visual direction focused on playful structure — bold iconography, bright color blocks, and movement — while avoiding clutter. I used a mix of larger “anchor” icons and smaller supporting elements to create rhythm and keep the designs visually engaging from all angles.

For the backdrop, special attention was given to negative space and layout hierarchy so the design would remain readable and photogenic even with people standing in front of it.

    Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: Designing for large-format print while ensuring graphics interacted cleanly with 3D physical elements.

Solution: Built layouts with intentional spacing and flow, allowing the typography and icons to complement — not compete with — the installation.

Challenge: Improving event name visibility in photos.

Solution: Elevated the “Family STEM Day” headline and refined the visual hierarchy so it remained visible in real-world event photography.

    The Result

  • Delivered multiple client-approved design options on a fast turnaround
  • Provided print-ready assets that required minimal adjustments by the printer
  • Created cohesive event visuals that were both kid-friendly and brand-aligned
  • Helped enhance the overall event experience and photo presence

  • Tools Used

  • Final Thoughts

This project was a great example of balancing creativity, brand consistency, and real-world execution. Designing for an interactive, family-focused event while maintaining Google’s brand standards made this a rewarding and collaborative experience.
